No Excuse
04:00
|
|||
When the sun comes up I crawl out of bed
Roll the daily bread and wait for it to rise
When the day comes along I can feel you’re gone
I will carry on, it’s all that I can do
To tell you the truth, to give you this promise
I feel no pain, I feel no bliss
To tell you the truth
Though may I seem heartless
To make no excuse for the way it is
I saw it coming from miles away
like a disco ball on the back of a freight train
You can go long way anticipating grief
I felt it coming from miles away
I felt the weight of changes, universal sameness;
I felt it go
To tell you the truth, to make you this promise
I feel no pain, I feel no bliss
To tell you the truth
Though may I seem heartless
To make no excuse for the way it is
I don’t want to cry and you don’t want to hear it;
I wouldn’t want to appear sad
I wouldn’t want you near that when you’re trying to go
I wanna say goodbye but I don’t want to fear it;
speaking incoherently
Maybe that’s the way the spirit speaks when you lose someone

Paid surrender
I’m losing myself
I’m losing my drive
Bleeding out slow
This face doesn’t lie
Paid endorsements
They paid for my shoes
And paid for my hair
They went to buy you
But you weren’t for sale
I’m gonna get through
When the moment is right
Everybody gets blue
Everyone has a price
Well I’m Californian
But my heart’s in the midwest
And my feet’s on a side quest
And the East Coast is singing
And they’re keeping me honest
Paid surrender I’ve been selling my way
Paid surrender has been keeping my face against the wall
Gonna get through
When the moment is right
Everybody gets blue
Everyone has a price
Well I’m gonna get mine
When the moment is right
Everybody gets blue
Everyone has a price

Children screaming outside in the noonday sun
There’s a new day mum I am through laying low
Watching the day roll by so slow
Hard wheels to the pavement, gonna bomb down that street
’til the ocean spreads even like the unified field
Down at the core of everything
There’s a method to this life
Like a veil upon the night
When the lands rise up, like peaks and valleys below the sheets
Gonna bomb those hills from here on down to easy street
Got some rats in the attic, they keep scratching around
When lay down for sleeping there ain’t none to be found
Under the starlight ‘til I dream
Of my hand on your shoulder, sand under my toes-nails
When we look at each other all the pain seems to flow away
Siphoned away, down the stream
There’s a method to this life
Like a veil upon the night
When the lands rise up like peaks and valleys below the sheets
Gonna bomb those hills from here on down to easy street
When I thought I had it made
When the best laid plans got laid
And the moon rose up; I knew we would dance again
When I see you soon on a hardwood floor I don’t know when

Take my time on the open road
Think I’ll take the long way around through Mendocino
Abalone coastline full of broken shells
Lights a pathway to the land of fallen angels
Light me that candle and I’ll unhook my phone
I grow tired of screens a flashing grey and blue
Oh dear sister we’re a long way home
I don’t mind waiting til I see you
Looking back I’m ready to confess
Life’s a lot to handle, I’ll pass the tests
I’ve gone through many changes, I’m ready for what’s next
To ring through the ages and sing through the changes
Music’s playing on the open dial
The AM band still flickers like a smile
Rock and roll’s alive the spirit never went away
Just some people that don’t care cause it don’t pay the same
Listening back I’m ready to confess
Life’s a lot to handle, I’ll pass the test
I move through many phases, I’m ready for what’s next
To ring through the ages and sing through the changes
Sing through the changes
The further you go travelling it’s harder keeping track
Of everywhere you come to hang your hats
I know a man with dogs for all the different states
And each time California starts to sing
She rings through the ages and sings through the changes
She rings through the ages and sings through the changes
I wanna turn through life’s pages
Rock and roll with the sages
I want to learn from my changes

Ain't Life Grand
03:17
|
|||
I left home today
Packed my things and went my way
Made a little farther down the line than I had planned
Following the open road
Nearly down to Mexico
Moving like a river flowing gentle along the sand
Oh it’s hard to see where I’m gonna be
Lately I don’t try to understand
So I don’t have to guess where I’m gonna land, I just say
Ain’t life grand?
When I get to Angeles
Lost and found my shaky knees
Eating like a refugee while I grow bronze and tanned
I met my woman there
A golden blond with a voice so fair
That leaves me kind of misty-eyed when singing about her man
It’s hard to see how it’s gotta be
Though lately I don’t try to understand
When I don’t want to guess where I’m gonna land, I just say:
Ain’t life grand?
All across the world today
People live and die they say
In traffic on the freeway with no drive to make a stand
Backed up down a one way street
Doomed to follow, never lead
Feels a little incomplete when life’s a little bland
It gets hard to see how it’s gotta be
Though lately I don’t try to understand
I don’t wanna guess where I’m gonna land, I’ll just say:
Ain’t life grand?
